Mapi and the baby.
Last night we had a bit of a scare with Mapi and the baby. We got home around 12:30AM after having dinner with some friends. Mapi went to bed right away and not an hour later she woke up complaining about stomach and back pain. She started walking around the bedroom and was crying in pain it hurt so bad. She was very concerned about the baby. She took a few TUMS and drank some tea and soon after vomited. She felt a little better. But then it started getting worse again. She ended up vomiting a second time. She felt a little better and tried to lay down while I rubbed her back. I assumed it was just something she ate and it would pass with time. She was still in extreme pain but managed to sleep for a few hours. The pain woke her up again around 5:30AM. Again she vomited and we decided to call the doctor here. Her mom had a friend whose husband is a gynecologist here. So we called him up and he met us at his clinic. He checked the baby's heartbeat and asked Mapi about her pain and he told us here was sure the pain had nothing to do with the baby and that the baby seemed to be in good health. He then gave Mapi a shot of something to settle her stomach and pain in her back. It was injected into the arm and I thought Mapi was going to pass out. She was okay when the nurse first put it in but she injected it so slowly and after awhile Mapi started to go nuts. Finally the nurse pulled it out with only a little left and she was ok. Mapi said her back and stomach pain was gone but that her arm hurt. After she rested a little the doctor sent us home and told us to make an appointment to get an ultrasound of her abdomen to see what was causing the pain. He said it could be her gall bladder or pancreas or something in that area. He was really nice and didn't charge us anything for his services just the cost of the medicine. We went home and then got a little sleep and went to get the ultrasound around 10AM. I was a little concerned about the whole "healthcare" in a different country but the doctor and nurse for drawing blood and for the ultrasound were phenomenal. Usually they have to dig around to find any veins in Mapi's arm but this nurse hit it right away and she was done in no time. The doctor that did the ultrasound was super nice and explained everything along the way. As soon as he started it he said he could see that she was in extreme pain. He said she has about 10 - 12 gallstones. Just as the first doctor had suspected. He then went on to check out the baby and make sure everything was ok there. It was so emotional to see the him/her again. Mapi's mom was in with us and she started to cry she was so excited. Then he switched it to the 4D ultrasound so that we could see the baby more clearly. That was amazing. What a feeling to see your baby so clearly for the first time. We can't wait till we can hold him/her in our arms for the first time. Mapi's mom wanted us to find out the sex of the baby but we had to tell her no. She was a little disappointed but I think she is, just as we are, happy to know that the baby is fine. They recorded the whole session so we now have a copy of our baby on cd. I posted about a 2 minute clip of it for you all to see and meet baby Byler! I ask that you keep Mapi and the baby in your prayers. Mapi has to be careful of what she eats she she doesn't inflame the stones more. The doctor gave us a prescription for her until she is able to see our doctor at home on Monday. The whole thingonly cost $70. Not too bad. Today we are just resting in the house so Mapi isn't so stressed out and so we can catch up on the sleep we lost last night. I'll try to post some more pics of the things we've been doing...especially our trip to Machu Picchu. It's been a great trip thus far aside from the events of last night and this morning. We just thank God that everything is good with the baby. We love you all and hope to see you soon.

We went on a four wheeler excursion today! Mapi's sister road with me since Mapi's a little on the pregnant side. Not even 5 minutes into the trip Shaun & Sarah's bike ran out of gas. Good thing the guide checked gas levels beforehand! We had a good time. Wasn't quite sure I was going to make it back after I let Gabriela drive on the return trip. I had to hit the brakes and jerk the handlebars a couple times to avoid hitting our guide. She would punch the gas and then laugh and look behind us to see the dust clouds she left for Shaun & Sarah. I should have known she was a bad driver...I mean...she IS Mapi's sister. Just kidding honey. I love you! :) We made it back in one piece and then went to eat at a restaurant where we had Lomo Saltado and Shaun had some shrimp. After lunch we stopped by a local winery to do some wine tasting and then we headed back to Lima. We got back to Lima around 7:30pm and then met with Miguel & Queca for supper. We didn't have much time with them because we had to get back to pack for Cusco on Monday!
We finally arrived in Lunahuana. This had to be the longest 2 days of my life our lives. After waking up at 7 AM Friday to finish packing for the trip and travelling all day/night we made the two and a half our trip to Lunahuana where Mapi's mom and her husband have a nice little bed and breakfast place. It's very cozy. A bunch of Mapi's friends from college met us there and we had a good time. After sleeping only a little on the plane to Lima we were in serious need of a nap at 6PM. After waking up and thinking it was at least 2AM I looked at the clock and realized it was only 8PM. We then went to to eat supper and hang out till about 1AM. The fun has just begun! This morning then I wake up to find that Mapi is already awake and has apparently left the building. I guess there was a small earthquake and she felt it and jumped up and ran out of the room screaming "EARTHQUAKE!" Thanks for making sure I got out safely dear. I didn't feel or hear a thing.
